Hey it’s February!
I like this month, it’s short and sweet and the last month of summer! It’s also almost Valentines day (vom) but to keep in the celebratory spirits, i thought I should at least make some effort, and maybe write a little something about our favourite four letter word… Love.
I’ve been thinking about love a bit lately, and that always leads to thinking about people, because, let’s face it… loving people is the most important kind of love. If the world only consisted of puppies and chocolate, loving would be a heck of a lot easier.
I love being around people. I am energised by being around people. I really love to talk and interact with people, and learn about different cultures and traditions. But sometimes these people that we love and are called to love, make the love not want to come out.
Jesus, however …
Jesus loves. Always.
Jesus loves because He IS love. Not because we are or aren’t loveable. Him loving us doesn’t depend on whether or not we act in ways that bring out those loving feelings. That’s why His love is unconditional. Our actions don’t change him. He is always the same, loving because He is love, and loving us so much that, through Christ, nothing we ever do will change that because He doesn’t even see it.
But … He commands us to do the same. To love because it’s who we are, it’s knitted into the very fibre of our beings through His spirit. He enables us to live out love because of what’s inside of us, and not to let it depend on what’s happening around us, or inside of someone else. So …
1 John 4:7,8
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
